“Ask not what your country can do for you…ask what you can do for your country”
More awe-inspiring words have never been spoken from a sitting president. In one sentence he conveyed the essence, the totality, of what it means to be an American. He encapsulated the spirt of individualism, self-reliance and selflessness. These bedrock foundations have helped define us as a nation and a people since the days of our founding. And it took a proud Democrat to reaffirm those values in us all again back in 1960.
Yes, a Democrat.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was a former Senator and proud WW2 veteran when he was elected as the 35th President of the United States. He was compassionate and fair, but he was also tough. He loved his country and always put her needs above our global neighbors. I guess you could say he was a Nationalist (dirty word, I know.) The legal citizens living within our borders always took precedence in his eyes. From the classrooms to the boardrooms to even the far reaches of space, he thought of our country as exceptional and superior and always strove to achieve greatness and singularity in her name. He was also unapologetically patriotic and steadfast in upholding the traditions and values that our framers set forth two centuries prior.
This populist who crossed party, racial, and ideological lines, galvanized a nation through his devotion to her citizens and his belief in her uniqueness in the world. JFK, simply put, was the every man’s president, and he was the embodiment of the Democrat party in 1960.
Fast forward some 60 years later, and the person that is getting all the pub in the Democrat party, the face-if you will, is a 28-year old former bartender from The Bronx. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came out of nowhere to beat out a complacent lifer for a congressional seat in a tiny New York district. She won, and captured her following, by making a sharp left turn into a realm of ideals and policies that were, a short time ago, only known by folks who studied world history, particularly the histories of Communist China, Russia and Cuba-to name a few.
An admitted “Democratic Socialist,” she has come out of the gate guns blazing to topple traditions, overhaul The Constitution, and redefine what it means to be an American. And, oddly, she’s got traction. A following. People are listening. Sure, most are coastal progressives with likeminded sensibilities, but there’s enough of them that she’s splitting her party into schisms and factions never seen before.
Just ten years ago she would have been laughed off the podium for her extremist rhetoric (I’m not going to waste my time itemizing her unicorns and rainbows wish list-it’ll get me running hot! And, I know you know most of them already anyway.) But not today. Today, she’s actually center stage. The star of the show. The media darling (just like JFK was six decades ago).
How did they get here? How did the party of the people get to this place? I’ve posted earlier about my prior allegiance to the Democrat party. My childhood Democrat party. About how they broke my heart and abandoned my values a long time ago and forced me to jump ship. But compared to today, to this moment in time, to this current regime, those Democrats look like a fusion of The Walton’s and a Norman Rockwell painting.
Yes, there’s a global ripple of resistance right now. The world seems to be collectively rejecting this hard push to the left. But it’s only a ripple. It’s temporary. Unsustainable. Eventually, the U.S. (and the rest of the world) will cave from the weight of this progressive/Socialist onslaught and will be remade in its image.
And only God knows what that world will look like.
But until that happens, I say no more claiming JFK as one of your own, Donkeys! He would never go down this path you’re so capriciously and recklessly carving. He’d never align with your extremism. He’d never subscribe to your personal war with our traditional values and inalienable rights.
He belongs to us now! The regular joes. The working stiffs. The freedom-loving, proud Americans. We, the people, claim the legacy of JFK.
You, Democrats, get AOC…and her eventual legacy.
